Brief About CPL

Back in 2008, around five years after the newest format of cricket – T20 – had only just about been introduced, the Indian Premier League (IPL) came into the spotlight and immediately started making waves. The success of the IPL was such that the shortest format of cricket became even more widespread around the world with cricket-crazy enthusiasts. This success led to other domestic T20 tournaments and leagues being held in some cricket countries.

Then in 2013, Cricket West Indies (CWI) founded the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) to promote the already growing popularity of T20 across the Caribbean. Fast forward to 2022 and we’re all set to witness the tenth edition of the CPL which is all set to ignite the island nations. The Caribbean Premier League 2022 is scheduled to be held for a month from August 30 to September 30 with all matches slated to be played in Saint Kitts and Nevis.

What is CPL?

The Carribean Premier League is an annual T20 domestic league that is held across some of the Caribbean islands between six teams. The CPL was introduced by the CWI as a replacement for Caribbean Twenty20 which ran from 2010 to 2013 and is currently officially titled the Hero CPL owing to sponsorship reasons.

The six teams in the CPL first start off battling it out in the group stage before later advancing to a knockout stage. During the group stage, each team plays a total of ten matches with three of them being hosted in their respective home grounds. The format might seem a little confusing for some, but the explanation is simple.

All six teams are co-located at one playing site for five straight matches before the tournament is relocated to a different location for the next five matches and so on, until each team has had the opportunity to host at least three matches.

There is a total of six stadiums used for the CPL of which each team is allotted one home venue. In the play-offs, there are two semi-finals and of course, the final with all three of these matches being held at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Brian Lara Stadium located in Tarouba, Trinidad and Tobago.

The success of the CPL across the cricketing world is evident from the fact that research suggested a 67% increase in television, streaming and digital viewership in the year 2020. The total number of viewers reached a whopping 523.5million and as a result, also passed half a billion viewers for the first time in CPL history. The viewership figures indicate that there was a massive 81% rise in India to over 74.9 million viewers, a growth of 62% in the United Kingdom besides a major increase across the Caribbean, South Africa and several other cricket nations in Asia.

In 2020, the Hero CPL also became the first franchise to be successfully conducted after the lockdown owing to the spread of COVID-19 as the 33 games were played in a secure bio bubble.

Full form of CPL

The CPL stands for Caribbean Premier League and replaced the now defunct Caribbean Twenty20 which was an annual T20 tournament that ran from 2010 to 2013 in the West Indies. The top team from the Caribbean Twenty20 would then qualify to the former Champions League Twenty20 tournament. The Caribbean Twenty20 featured a total of seven teams – Barbados, Combined Campuses and Colleges, Guyana, Jamaica, Leeward Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Windward Islands – and was played in the same group and knockout format. At the time in 2011, the competition prize money was $1,25,000 while the winning team would receive a total of $62,500. The best player of the match was awarded $500.

CPL Teams 2022

Following the replacement of the Caribbean Twenty20, the Caribbean Premier League has witnessed greater success and the new league also offers more players from the West Indies the opportunity to be a part of one of six CPL teams and create a name for themselves. The CPL presently features a total of six teams including Barbados Royals, Guyana Amazon Warriors, Jamaica Tallawahs, St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots, Saint Lucia Kings, and Trinbago Knight Riders. Earlier, there was also a team named Antigua Hawksbills which has been defunct from 2015. Most of the team’s players then shifted to play for St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots. There have been discussions that the Antigua Hawksbills might be reintroduced in the near future following which the Caribbean Premier League will then feature seven teams instead of the current six.

In the CPL, each team has a total of 15 contracted players with a maximum of five overseas players four Under-23 players. Besides, CPL teams also feature one local and international franchise player to make the event even more exciting.

CPL Players Retained and New Signings

The Caribbean Premier League is filled with some of the most exciting players in the short format of the game. In fact, many of the CPL players have also been linked with some of the premier domestic T20 leagues such as the IPL. A lot of players have been retained by the CPL teams while there are also several new signings that have been made.

Barbados Royals have retained several players including skipper Jason Holder and Kyle Mayers while signings Devon Thomas and Obed McCoy.

Guyana Amazon Warriors have kept their big stars Shimron Hetmyer, Odean Smith, Romario Shepherd and Chandrapaul Hemraj while their new faces include Keemo Paul and Gudakesh Motie.

Jamaica Tallawahs have retained the explosive Rovman Powell along with Kennar Lewis and Shamarh Brooks. Brandon King and Fabian Allen now join them for the season.

St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots look solid with star players Dwayne Bravo, Dominic Drakes, Evin Lewis, Sheldon Cottrell and Sherfane Rutherford being retained while Andrew Fletcher and Darren Bravo join the squad as new signings.

With St. Lucia Kings, retained players include Alzarri Joseph, Roston Chase, Kesrick Williams and Jeavor Royal. The Kings have signed Johnson Charles and Mark Deyal.

Finally, favourites Trinbago Knight Riders have held on to Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine, Akeal Hosain, Jayden Seales and Tion Webster. To bolster their already formidable lineup, the Knight Riders have brought in the dangerous Andre Russell and Nicholas Pooran.

CPL Top Players To Watch Out For

The CPL is filled with some of the most explosive batters in the shortest format along with pacers that have been touching upwards of 150 kmph and are capable of rocking the best batters in the world. So, it’s no surprise that this season’s CPL too, is expected to produce some exciting players and results. Let’s take a look at some players we think you should keep an eye on this CPL:

(1) Kieron Pollard:

Be it in the CPL or IPL, Kieron Pollard has always been one of the most dangerous all-rounders in limited overs. Pollard is one of those players than can change the course of the game and swing the result in his team’s favour even when all chips are down. His experience across various T20 leagues in different countries exposes him as one of the most seasoned limited overs player.

(2) Andre Russell:

With over 300 T20 matches in leagues across the world, Andre Russell is as lethal as Kieron Pollard. The all-rounder is expected to be a key player for Trinbago Knight Riders and coupled with the fact that he will be playing alongside Pollard and other big names this season, Russell is another player to track during this CPL.

(3) Brandon King:

Guyana Amazon Warriors’ Brandon King is another player to look out for. The stylish opening batter may only have two 50s to his name in T20s, but a lot is expected from him and the 2022 season could just end up being a successful one for him.

(4) Jayden Seales:

There is a reason Trinbago Knight Riders have retained Jayden Seales despite the medium pacer only taking 6 wickets in as many games last season. The promise to deliver. Seales has been an important member of the team since 2020 and now that the Knight Riders have an even stronger squad, the onus will be on the 20-year-old to deliver.

(5) Darren Bravo:

The half-brother of the legend himself, Dwayne Bravo, Darren Bravo has now joined St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots and a lot will be expected of him. His performance last season with Trinbago Knight Riders was anything but extraordinary with a total of only 98 runs from 7 innings and a below-par average and strike rate. However, this could be the year for the younger Bravo with his new franchise.

CPL Schedule

The Caribbean Premier League 2022 season has been scheduled to commence on August 30 and will run through September 30. The fixtures are yet to be announced.

CPL Team Winners List

No surprises as to which the most successful team is in the Caribbean Premier League. Trinbago Knight Riders have won the title four times out of nine editions of the CPL. Before being re-branded Trinbago Knight Riders, the team won their first title under the name Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel in 2015 against Barbados Tridents. Dwayne Bravo was declared player of the series in that edition. The Knight Riders then went on to win in 2017, 2018, and more recently in 2020. This year too, they are strong favourites to win the title.

Rivals Barbados Tridents have won the CPL twice (in 2014 and 2019), while Jamaica Tallawahs won the inaugural edition in 2013 followed by another title victory in 2016.

The Caribbean Premier League is currently being defended by St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots who defeated Saint Lucia Kings by three wickets to claim the final in 2021.
