The rule of powerplay applies only to limited overs cricket and not Test cricket. As one would understand, in ODIs and T20s each batting team’s prime motive is to score as many runs as possible before they run out of overs to bat. This is where powerplay provides the batting side an advantage. Under the powerplay rule, only a set of number of fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle which gives batters the opportunity to play big shots and clear the fielders inside the circle.

In T20s, the first six overs of the innings is mandatory powerplay, which means that only two fielders will be allowed outside the 30-yard circle. From the seventh overs onwards, a maximum of five fielders are allowed to field outside that circle which as a result, can slow down the scoring rate.
