Top 10 Lowest Totals in CPL Matches

When we think of West Indies cricket, we think of high-flying sixes that easily clear the boundary. However, the finest in the business occasionally fail miserably, resulting in lower totals.

In CPL matches, as in all versions of T20 cricket, there are low-run scenarios when batsmen control most of the time but the ball does the talking at other times of the day.

Today, we’ll look at the top ten lowest totals in CPL matches dating back to the league’s start. The list is in chronological order, and there are a lot of surprises when it comes to the lowest totals.

2St Lucia Zouks (56/0) vs. Guyana Amazon Warriors (55)
3Barbados Tridents (158-8) vs. Guyana Amazon Warriors (59)
4St Lucia Zouks (69) vs. St Kitts and Nevis Patriots (70-3)
5Tallawahs of Jamaica (183/6) vs. Patriots of St. Kitts and Nevis (75)
6Jamaica Tallawahs (156/6) vs. Guyana Amazon Warriors (79)
7Jamaica Tallawahs (199-5) vs. St Kitts & Nevis Patriots(80)
8Barbados Tridents (175-8) vs. Jamaica Tallawahs (87)
9Barbados Tridents (89/7) vs. St Lucia Zouks (92).
  1. Barbados Tridents (53/6) vs. T&T Red Steel (52).

It would be an understatement to say that Red Steel, now known as Trinbago Knight Riders, is the most well-known team in CPL history. They do, however, have some undesirable records to their credit.

Barbados Tridents TKR batted first against their arch-rivals and were bowled out for 52 runs. Yes, the figures are accurate. The double-digit total, in which Shakib grabbed six wickets for pleasure, blew them away.

The fact that Barbados, too, did not reach the target immediately is fascinating. Tridents then lost six wickets for a total of 53 runs. Five wickets were taken by Fidel Edwards. It is hardly an exaggeration to claim that the game was designed for bowlers.

  1. St Lucia Zouks (56/0) vs. Guyana Amazon Warriors (55)

Would you enjoy it if the club you root for scores the second-lowest total in CPL history, and it happens to be in a semifinal? When Amazon Warriors faced Zouks in the second semifinal of CPL 2020, they were heartbroken.

Zouks, who chose to bat first in the game, never let the Warriors get comfortable. Chandrapaul Hemraj made the highest score of 25 runs, and nothing else came to mind after that. Two wickets each were taken by Roston Chase, Scott, Zahir Khan, and Mark Deyal. There was no time to waste when the opponents came to bat. In 27 balls, Zouks chased down the target without losing a wicket. Similarly, the Warriors suffered another playoff disappointment.

  1. Barbados Tridents (158-8) vs. Guyana Amazon Warriors (59)

There are instances when someone has a day off, and that player tends to walk away with the game by himself. When Sohail Tanvir ran into the Barbados Tridents batting lineup, it was similar.

The Barbados Tridents, on the other hand, won the toss and chose to field first, which proved to be a mistake. Warriors took their time on the field and scored 158 runs, led by Jason Mohammad’s 42 runs.

With their formidable batting lineup, the Tribe considered chasing it right away, but that didn’t happen. Sohail Tanvir found his stride and bowled a five-for-three performance. Akela Hosein scored the most runs with 17 runs.

  1. St Lucia Zouks (69) vs. St Kitts and Nevis Patriots (70 points)

The bowlers of St Kitts wrapped a knot around the batting of the St Lucia Zouks and never let it open on the spinning surface of Gros Islet. 69 was all that the Zouks could manage.

The middle of the pitch was a disaster for Zouks, with Qais Ahmed contributing the most runs with 24. With three wickets, Sheldon Cottrell was the show’s standout, while Sandeep and Mahmudullah each took two. Coming in to chase the goal, St Kitts walked towards it with a 38 from Devon Thomas, winning in 46 balls, which is also one of the fastest chases in CPL history.

  1. Jamaica Tallawahs (183/6) vs. Patriots of St. Kitts and Nevis (75)

It was on Kingston’s turf that a record for one of the lowest totals in the history of CPL matches was set. When Jamaica took on St Kitts, they had no idea what was about to happen.

St Kitts won the toss and elected to field, and everything has gone wrong for them since then. Kumar Sangakarra, Rovman Powell, and Shakib Al Hasan all contributed significantly to the total of 183 runs. It was a respectable total, but not one that will be easy for Jamaica to win. St Kitts didn’t get off to the best of starts, losing wickets after wicket. Except for Jonathan Carter’s 23 runs, no one else made a significant contribution. As a result, the franchise was shut down for 75 runs. Kesrick Williams grabbed three wickets in the bowling department, while Russell, Steyn, and Shakib each took two.

  1. Trinbago Knight Riders (78/1) vs. St Kitts and Nevis Patriots (77).

This was one of the latest CPL 2021 games when the batter was made to look like a rabbit, while the ball did all the talking. It was a classic matchup between old rivals St. Nevis and Trinidad & Tobago.

St Nevis did little right while batting first on a strong Tarouba pitch. Denesh Ramdin made the most significant contribution, scoring 19 runs, but otherwise, nothing good happened.

Trinbago’s bowling, on the other hand, thrived on the pitch, with Fawad Ahmed collecting four wickets. The bowlers benefited from the spinning pitch, with the spinner taking eight wickets.

Trinbago strolled through the short goal of 78 runs, with Tion Webster scoring 41 runs and making the chase simple for the squad. The game was made simple for T&T, a traditional spinner’s delight.

  1. Jamaica Tallawahs (79) vs. Guyana Amazon Warriors (156-6)

The Guyana Amazon Warriors were on a roll throughout the CPL 2019, winning game after game with relative ease. The Jamaica Tallawahs have also blasted away in the victory run.

Guyana batted first in the 29th game of the season, scoring 156 runs thanks to a superb half-century from Sohaib Malik and a solid contribution from Sherfane Rutherford.

Jamaica was blown away right away after making a statement to chase the objective. The loss of Chris Gayle in the first game didn’t help matters either. Nothing stood out save two 21-run innings from the top of the order. Imran Tahir, on the other hand, seemed to relish the pitch as they picked up three wickets.

  1. Jamaica Tallawahs (80) vs. St Kitts & Nevis Patriots (199/5)

When we talk about the ideal T20 match, we mean it in terms of bowling, batting, and fielding. When St Kitts took on the Jamaica Tallawahs, similar sights could be seen.

On a decent pitch, St Kitts batted first and scored a respectable 199 runs, setting a goal of 200 to achieve. These runs were only possible thanks to Evin Lewis’ 82 runs and Carlos Braithwaite’s low-order 37.

Jamaica batted first, believing the chase would be easier. The only thing they got right was playing the entire match in 16 overs. Tallawahs’ Chris Lynn led the team in scoring with 20 runs. Shamsi grabbed four wickets, but Cottrell only took three, ensuring the team’s victory.

  1. Barbados Tridents (175-8) vs. Jamaica Tallawahs (87)

Several times, the Jamaica Tallawahs have been on the receiving end of the lowest totals. In the year 2014, they played against the Barbados Tridents and lost badly.

Tridents chose to bat first in the game and scored a respectable 175 runs while losing eight wickets. Kieron Pollard’s half-century was vital in determining the total at that time.

Tallawahs were in deep-sea from the outset, as they continued dropping wicket after wicket. Nkrumah Bonner’s 47 runs were the only noteworthy contribution. Ashley Nurse, Rayad Emrit, and Jeevan Mendis each took two wickets to help Jamaica lose the match.

  1. Barbados Tridents (89/7) vs. St Lucia Zouks (92).

T20 cricket has never been closer in its history. From the total allocated 20 overs, one team scored 92 runs, while the other could only manage 89 runs without losing any wickets.

In the match between Zouks and Tridents in 2020, Zouks batted first and scored 92 runs. Nobody anticipated Daren Sammy’s team to be able to defend that in the middle innings, but they surprised everyone.

They defend 92 runs thanks to two wickets each from Javelle Glen and Kesrick Williams, who both bowled well. Not only that, but every other Zouks bowler bowled well, conceding the fewest runs.
