The last Lok Sabha elections took place in seven phases starting on April 11 and were declared on March 10. May 23 was election day.

The two recently appointed election commissioners, Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, joined the poll panel on the same day that the Election Commission announced the poll timetable.

Two positions became available for election commissioners at the Election Commission of India after Anup Chandra Pandey retired on February 14 and Arun Goel abruptly resigned last week.

The political contest between the Congress-led INDIA alliance and the PM Narendra Modi-led NDA government will also be framed by this announcement.

Lok Sabha election 2024: Nearly 97 crore people registered to vote

The Election Commission announced earlier this month that the highest electorate ever for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections is 96.88 crore persons who have registered to vote.

The voters’ list now includes two crore youth voters, or those between the ages of 18 and 29.

“After constituency boundaries were established, this also involved the effective completion of the updating of electoral rolls in Jammu and Kashmir and Assam. The EC had declared, “The project, carried out with careful planning, coordination, and involvement of political parties, has produced notable achievements in terms of inclusivity, health, and purity of the electoral rolls.”

This week, the ECI concluded its nationwide assessment of vote readiness across all States with a visit to Jammu and Kashmir.

Parties from both national and regional scopes have already started revealing their nominees for the 543 parliamentary seats. For the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress has disclosed the names of 82 candidates across two lists, while the BJP has so far released two lists totaling 267 candidates.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India (ECI) released data on electoral bonds it had obtained from the State Bank of India on March 14. It has also requested the return of the documents related to electoral bonds that were given to the Supreme Court in sealed boxes or with a sealed cover.
