South Africa all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius has been ruled out of the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia after suffering a fracture on his left thumb.

According to an official statement from Cricket South Africa (CSA), Pretorius had sustained the finger injury during the third T20I against India at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore, where South Africa came out triumphant by 49 runs.

“The nature of the injury requires surgical intervention and Dwaine will consult the Cricket South Africa designated hand surgeon on arrival in South Africa. Normal rehabilitation procedures will follow to ensure he speedily returns to playing cricket,” said Chief Medical Officer Dr Shuaib Manjra.

Pretorius follows middle-order batter Rassie van der Dussen as the second major player from South Africa to miss the T20 World Cup scheduled to kick-start later in October in Australia. In the swashbuckling all-rounder’s place, left-arm pace all-rounder Marco Jansen has joined the ODI squad while an official announcement on Pretorius’ replacement for the T20 World Cup is set to be decided in the days to follow.

Jansen and fellow pace all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo along with left-arm spin all-rounder Bjorn Fortuin are South Africa’s travelling reserves for the T20 World Cup. The three players are now in contention to be promoted as Pretorius’ replacement in the main squad.
