In the 12th over of South Africa’s chase, veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and cricket fans were stunned when former India captain Virat Kohli lost a dolly to give Aiden Markram a reprieve in Perth on Sunday.

The ball was immediately in Kohli’s hands, but the former India captain dropped it. Ashwin was stunned by Kohli’s error because it was one of the simpler catches. Even Kohli’s skipper Rohit Sharma was shocked to see him miss the catch.

Markram was 35 runs up when Kohli threw him out. The right-handed batsman contributed to the victory by going on to make a half-century and finishing at 52 off 41. Markram’s catch undoubtedly could have made a difference, and Team India paid the price for that missed opportunity.

India has won two of its last three games in the ICC T20 World Cup.
