Sourav Ganguly: Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma Should Open for India in T20 World Cup

At the T20 World Cup in June, India’s opening batsmen should be Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. That’s the viewpoint of former India captain and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly. Ganguly’s opinion was sought regarding the players who should board the flight to the United States and the Caribbean during a media interaction organised by Delhi Capitals on Monday. Ganguly is the mentor of the IPL franchise. There is just over a week until the selectors get together to choose India’s 15-member squad for the grand event.

In the West Indies and the USA during the T20 World Cup in 2024, Sourav Ganguly, the former president of the BCCI, believes that India’s opening batsmen should be Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The World Cup roster will soon be announced, and this season, Kohli and Rohit have been playing fantastically for their IPL teams.

In an interview with PTI, Ganguly stated that both Rohit and Kohli would undoubtedly participate in the forthcoming T20 World Cup in June, adding that in his opinion, the two should lead the national team’s batting attack.
“Both Rohit Sharma and Viral Kohli will definitely go to the West Indies and USA. It’s a call for selectors whom they will open with but if you ask me personally both Rohit and Virat should open for India in the T20 World Cup,” said Ganguly.

Even though the BCCI stated in February that Rohit would captain India in the T20 World Cup, there has been discussion about the composition of the Indian top order as the 17th IPL edition approaches its halfway point. While opening the batting for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Kohli leads the team in runs scored in the ongoing IPL, his strike rate in the shorter format continues to divide views. Kohli’s century against the Rajasthan Royals earlier this season, which came off 67 balls.

But Ganguly still views Rohit and Kohli as essential players for the t20 team. “I feel both will go. And both should go. And in my personal opinion, they should open,” he said. “You have to look at every performance. A good team is a balance of experience and youth. The experienced players are tremendous and I am not saying only because of the number of games. It’s the performances they have put in over a period of time.”

Even if RCB and MI haven’t played up to par this season, Kohli and Rohit have been in excellent form. With an average of 63.17 and 379 runs from 8 games this season, Kohli is now leading the Orange Cap standings. Opening the batting for RCB, the top player has also managed to keep his strike-rate above 150 this season.
In the 7 matches of IPL so far, Rohit has amassed 297 runs at an average of 49.5, the highest total he has had in the last few IPL seasons. Next up for MI is Rohit when they play RR at Sawai Mansingh Stadium.
