11 Students in Telangana & MP Commit Suicide After Board Exams

After the release of the results of the intermediate and Class 10 board exams, seven students from Telangana and four from Madhya Pradesh committed suicide. Five girls and two boys committed suicide as a result of their poor exam scores. According to TOI, four more students in Madhya Pradesh committed suicide for the same reason.

A youngster in Khammam who had chosen the Physics-Chemistry-Mathematics (PCM) course was unable to pass her Math B paper. A 16-year-old student from Hydershakote in Rajendranagar, who had lost her mother a few years prior, similarly took the same measure after learning about the results. A 17-year-old boy from Kollur was found dead on a lake bund.

In Mahabubabad, a second-year Inter student’s failure in commerce led to one reported case of suicide. Additionally, in MP, tragic incidents involved a 16-year-old girl and boy from class X in Gwalior and Sehore, along with two students aged 18 and 19 in Burhanpur and Khargone, respectively, from class XII. These suicides were attributed to academic pressures, notably failures in mathematics.

Two additional students from class X in Betul are currently in critical condition on ventilators, having survived suicide attempts.
The majority of Telangana students who committed suicide after the results were announced were enrolled in the science stream and were taking their first-year intermediate exams. A chemistry paper was failed by a teenage girl from the Medak district for the second time.

There has been no official statement from government officials regarding the exact number of reported deaths related to student suicides after exam results. However, police have confirmed multiple suicide cases across the state, as reported by the Indian Express. The first such incident in Telangana this year involved a 16-year-old from Tandur in Mancherial district who died after failing in four subjects in the first year.

The students who took their lives, mostly aged between 16 to 17, resorted to methods like hanging, jumping into a community well, or drowning in a pond.

On Wednesday, April 24, the Telangana State Board of Intermediate Education (TSBIE) unveiled the results for class 11th and 12th. The data indicated a marginal decline in the pass percentage for Inter 1st year compared to the preceding year. Specifically, the pass rate was 63.85% in 2023, which saw a decrease to 61.06% in 2024.
