Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Mumbai Indians (MI) produced an incredible IPL match yesterday, with SRH winning in a match that broke all previous records. Hyderabad hosted the match, which saw an incredible batting exhibition as SRH rewrote history with their record-breaking 277/3 total—the highest in IPL history.

With their first score of 62 off just 24 balls, Travis Head set the tone and got the fireworks going for SRH early. Even with Mayank Agarwal’s early demise, Head’s assault established a strong base. Continuing the attack, Abhishek Sharma blasted a brilliant 63 off 23 deliveries, complete with three fours and seven sixes. Heinrich Klaasen, however, caused the most damage with an incredible undefeated knock of 80 runs off 34 balls, which included four fours and seven sixes. With an undefeated 42, Aiden Markram also made a contribution, helping SRH attain the historic total.

MI was left with the difficult task of chasing down 278 runs in response. They made a great effort, but were unable to reach the required score of 246/5 in the 20 overs. Tilak Varma scored 64 runs in a vigorous half-century to offer some opposition. It was insufficient, though, to surpass the enormous goal set by SRH. With the ball, SRH’s Pat Cummins and Jaydev Unadkat shone, taking two wickets apiece to help them win by a comfortable 31 runs.

The game broke records in addition to being a run fest. With their 277/3 total, SRH beat the previous IPL record, which was set in 2013 by Royal Challengers Bangalore. A record-breaking 38 sixes were hit throughout the match, which created a new T20 world record for the most sixes in a single game. The high-scoring match left spectators amazed at both sides’ batting prowess.

With their first win of the season, SRH gained two points and moved up to third place in the IPL 2024 points standings after their win. Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the reigning champions, are now atop the standings after winning two of their last two games to total four points.

Heinrich Klaasen of the SRH won the Orange Cap in the individual performance rankings thanks to his prolific innings, scoring 143 runs in two games. In the run-scoring standings, he is ahead of players like Abhishek Sharma and Virat Kohli. In the meantime, Mustafizur Rahman of CSK is leading the Purple Cap race after taking six wickets in two matches, closely followed by Jasprit Bumrah and Harpreet Brar.
