Afghanistan, Ireland match abandoned due to heavy showers

Rains poured down as the Group 1 clash of the Super 12 stage in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 between Afghanistan and Ireland was abandoned without a ball being bowled at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Both teams have been awarded one point each. As a result of inclement weather, the tally of games abandoned due to rain in the week is three. For Afghanistan, it is their second straight no-result after the washout against New Zealand at the same venue earlier.

It rained at the MCG for a majority of the day as ground staff kept the covers on and the pitch was under wraps. Rain was forecast for the whole of the day, leaving even the possibility of a shortened game quashed before play was eventually called off after 4:30 pm in Melbourne.

“Most of the players are disappointed, not having played on such a fantastic ground. Rashid and I have played but others haven’t but weather is not in our control. So we have to accept it. We look forward to the future games and hope to win,” Afghanistan’s skipper Mohammad Nabi said.

As a result, Afghanistan have two points from two matches and are at the bottom of Group 1 after their loss against England in Perth. Ireland, meanwhile, jump to second in the points table behind table-toppers New Zealand, who have three points from as many matches.
