According to many unverified theories, it originated in the Vedic period of ancient India. The theory says that Kabaddi was very popular among Yadavas. In an Abhang, Turkuram mentioned that god Krishna used to play Kabaddi in his youth. 

Even in Mahabharata, Abhimanyu’s Chakravyuh Trap is one of the tactics used in Defense. Arjuna was a master in Kabaddi. A passage in Mahabharata, which is parallel to Kabaddi, mentioned how smartly Arjuna used to go into the enemy’s area and come back unhurt. 

There are several such unverified theories but these stories and the way Kabaddi is played, it can surely be said that the sport is being played in the sub-continent region for centuries.
