Dabang Delhi KC vs Bengal Warriors (52-35)

‘Unbeaten’ Dabang Delhi KC thrashed defending champions Bengal Warriors by 52-35 in the first match of the day.

Naveen Kumar registered 24 points from 25 raids, his best performance to date in the history of the Pro Kabaddi League. Delhi avenged their defeat in the last season’s final with a massive win over the defending champions Bengal Warriors.

Naveen was aggressive from the start which left Bengal defence clueless every time ‘Naveen Express’ came for a raid. Naveen started off with a touchpoint on Mohammad Nabibakhs. In his very next raid, he enticed the left corner to go for a tackle and came back with a raid point. Within moments, Naveen extended Delhi’s lead by 5-1 with another successful raid.

The raiding was so efficient from Dabang Delhi KC that the All-Out was inflicted twice on Bengal Warriors, in the first 12 minutes with the scoreline reading 7-21 after the second all out. The scoreboard kept moving for the Delhi team with every raid as Naveen & Vijay, with apt support from Jeeva Kumar in the defence put Delhi in a commanding position.

Naveen Kumar was at his absolute best and his agility was a treat for the fans to watch. Soon, he notched up his 25th consecutive Super 10 in the PKL as he without mercy took defenders in his raids. It is also noteworthy that Bengal Warriors looked incompetent in defence and lacked conviction. Just before the first half ended, Naveen stumbled and gave away Super Tackle points to the Bengal’s defence which came together for the first time in the match. Although by then Dabang Delhi were already ahead by 33-15.

After half time we saw another side of the Bengal Warriors’ defence as Abozhar Mighani sent Ashu Malik out of the court. Bengal Warriors skipper Maninder Singh rose to the occasion with a fantastic five-point raid when he cornered all the Delhi defence and took them in his raid as Bengal tried to stage a comeback at 22-34.

However, Delhi isn’t a team to keep quiet for long. Vijay etched his Super 10 as he dodged Bengald Warriors’ right cover and right corner to again put Delhi in the driving seat with 38-24.

Naveen then returned to pick up his 20th raid point of the match as Delhi got stronger at 40-25. Mighani soon sent Vijay with an ankle hold as Bengal looked to reduce the difference by 29-41. Dabang Delhi KC on the other hand played from strength to strength as they inflicted yet another All Out on Bengal Warriors when Naveen got a touchpoint against Moighani with the scoreline reading 49-31.

The fact that veteran Manjeet Chhillar looked off-colour in the defence for Delhi was eclipsed with Naveen’s show. Maninder Singh (16 raid points) and Sukesh Hegde (9 raid points) tried their best for Bengal Warriors but in the end, they were left with plenty to ponder as they never recovered well from Naveen’s onslaught.

Even though veteran Delhi defender Manjeet Chillar looked out of touch in the defence but Naveen’s performance under shadowed this. Maninder Singh (16 raid points) and Sukesh Hegde (9 raid points) tried their best for Bengal Warriors but in the end, they were left with plenty to deal with as they never recovered from ‘Naveen Express’ impeccable performance.

UP Yoddha vs Gujarat Giants (32-32)

Gujarat giants & UP Yoddha played out a 32-32 draw in the 209th match of the Pro Kabaddi League season 8.

Gujarat Giants would be unhappy with the result as they led for the major part of the match, with a lead of 20-14 at the break. UP Yoddha however, staged a spectacular comeback in the second half to give nothing away and make sure that Gujarat works hard for every point. Rakesh Narwal was the pick of the raiders from Gujarat Giants with 13 points, aptly supported by Ajay Kumar while Girish Erna (4 Tackle Points) was a crucial part of the defence.

For UP Yoddha, Pardeep Narwal was the best performer with 11 raid points and he got enough support from Surender Gill with 6 points. Pardeep started off well for UP with a fantastic two-pointer, dodging the defensive tackle from Rakesh and Girish.

Ajay Kumar then went on to put Gujarat Giants on the scoresheet with his first raid when he completed a running hand touch on Surender Gill.

All eyes were set on Rakesh Narwal who came up with a crucial raid for Gujarat and put them in lead by 4-3 when he took out 3 defenders. A superb defence display helped Gujarat Giants to send star raider Pardeep Narwal to the bench as they extended their lead to 6-3.

Surender Gill avoided an all-out for UP Yoddha as he sent Ravinder Pahal to the bench, picking up a bonus point as well in the same raid. Soon, UP Yoddha levelled with Gujarat Giants with a scoreline reading 7-7 when Surender Gill and Sumit felled Rakesh Narwal.

Gujarat Giants slowly rose to control when Rakesh sent two more UP Yoddha defenders, registering 4 points and inflicted an all-out on the UP team at 7-12. However, a defensive collapse by Gujarat on Pardeep Narwal changed the score to 8-1, as ‘Dubki King’ scored a touchpoint.

At halftime, Gujarat Giants were still leading with 20-14 with impressive performances from Girish Ernak & Rakesh Narwal.

UP Yoddha emerged as the better team in the second half negating all aggressive/advance raiding attempts from Gujarat Giants and restoring parity at 22-22. Rakesh Narwal soon completed his Super 10 of the as the Giants held onto their lead at 25-23.

Ajay Kumar then ducked two UP Yoddha defenders as he freed himself from an ankle hold to give an advantage to Gujarat Giants at 29-26. Both the teams traded points from hereon and there was nothing to separate both the teams as they displayed excellent all-round performance.
