In 2009, under the leadership of former Australia wicket keeper-batter Adam Gilchrist, Rohit had a mediocre run in the season, with a total of just 362 runs and a single half-century. But, that season turned out to be memorable for DC, as they won the IPL title after defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore in the summit clash.

In 2011’s mega auction, Rohit was bought by Mumbai Indians for Rs 15 crore, becoming the fourth most expensive player of the season. He scored a total of 372 runs with the highest score of 87. He got his first IPL century in 2012 when he scored 109* against KKR, which is also the highest score of the tournament to date.

In 2013, Rohit took over the captaincy of MI from former Australia batter Ricky Ponting, after the latter had a downfall in his batting form. Under Rohit’s captaincy, MI won their first-ever IPL title in 2013, with Rohit scoring a whopping total of 538 runs and 3 half-centuries in the season.

2013’s triumph could not be repeated in 2014, as MI got qualified into the playoffs but were not able to make their way into finals, after losing to Chennai Super Kings in the Eliminator. Rohit scored 390 runs in the season.

2015 proved to be a brilliant year for both MI as well as Rohit, as the franchise emerged victorious once again while the skipper contributed with 482 runs. He had the highest score of 98* with a total of 3 half-centuries in the entire season. MI defeated CSK in the final clash by 41 runs.

In 2016, Rohit scored a total of 489 runs with the highest score of 85*. He had registered 5 half-centuries, which is also his highest to date. MI finished the season in fifth place in the points table.

In 2017, Rohit became the most successful captain of IPL, as MI got their third title of the cash-rich tournament, after defeating Rising Pune Supergiant in the finals by one run. The final is also considered as one of the best IPL matches of all time. Rohit scored 333 runs in that season with 3 half-centuries.

2018 turned out to be a major disappointment for the franchise and Rohit. MI finished fifth in the points table while Rohit was only able to score 286 runs in 14 matches, after being retained ahead of the mega auction. This was followed by a historical win in 2019, where they defeated CSK in the final match in yet another thriller and registered their fourth IPL victory. The skipper had an amazing journey in the season with a total of 405 runs in 15 matches.

In 2020, MI put a halt to all the superstitions about them winning the IPL title in only the odd years, as they defeated Delhi Capitals in the summit clash and clinched the title for the fifth time. Having played only 12 matches, Rohit scored 332 runs with the highest score of 80 runs.

In 2021, Rohit scored 381 runs in 13 matches, whereas MI finished fifth in the points table. For the 2022 season, MI retained Rohit along with Jasprit Bumrah, Kieron Pollard, and Surya Kumar Yadav, ahead of the mega auction.

To date, Rohit has played a total of 213 IPL matches and scored 5611 runs, along with one century and 40 half-centuries. He is considered the most successful captain of IPL, taking his side to victory five times.
