Today’s Court Date for Arvind Kejriwal As Probe Agency Custody Ends: 10 Points

Arvind Kejriwal was taken into custody on March 21 and has been managing his government duties from the place where the Enforcement Directorate has been keeping him since then.

New Delhi: Today marks the end of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s time in the custody of the Enforcement Directorate. The central agency investigating the suspected liquor policy scandal is expected to bring him to court for further proceedings.

These are the main ten points in this big story:

  1. Arvind Kejriwal got caught by the police on March 21 and has been managing his government stuff from a police cell since then. When they were supposed to let him go on March 28, a court said he had to stay there for four more days until April 1.
  2. Mr. Kejriwal went to the Delhi High Court to complain about being arrested. He says the investigation agency didn’t treat him fairly. The court asked the investigation agency to explain by April 2. They will talk about it more in court on April 3.
  3. He has called for a “political conspiracy” behind his arrest, and his party has been planning large-scale protests. Intense demonstrations from the opposition camp have also been sparked by his detention, which came just before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
  4. Big leaders from the opposition came together for a huge rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan yesterday. They all asked for Mr. Kejriwal and former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren to be set free. Mr. Soren was arrested by the ED in January for another issue.
  5. Following her husband’s incarceration, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal, has been instrumental in speaking to supporters and communicating with them from behind bars.

6. She delivered a strong speech at Ramlila Maidan yesterday criticizing the federal administration. In addition, she carried a message from Mr. Kejriwal, stating that the Chief Minister had promised to hold six elections prior to the Lok Sabha elections.

7. She said the Chief Minister was sick, had diabetes, and that his blood sugar had been swinging when she saw him last week while he was being held in the emergency department. According to sources, Mr. Kejriwal’s blood sugar fell to 46, which is dangerously low.

8. The United Nations, along with the United States and Germany, have commented on Mr. Kejriwal’s arrest. The UN hopes that everyone’s rights will be respected, especially with elections coming up. India recently called in the US and German ambassadors to express disagreement with their remarks about the Chief Minister’s arrest.

9. Mr. Kejriwal is now the third AAP leader to be arrested in the supposed liquor policy scam, following his former deputy Manish Sisodia and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh. He was taken into custody because he ignored nine requests from the central agency to come in for questioning.

10. The excise policy was meant to revamp the liquor industry in Delhi but was canceled when Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena launched an investigation into suspected irregularities. The Enforcement Directorate thinks the policy led to significant profits, and allegedly, bribe money from it was used to finance AAP’s election campaigns.
