Phase 1 Voting Live Updates: Violence in Bengal, Blast in Chhattisgarh as 102 Lok Sabha Seats Go to Polls

On Friday, during the first round of voting, there were violent reports out of West Bengal. The Trinamool Congress accused BJP members of intimidating voters in Begarkata, while the BJP asserted that TMC workers threw stones at Chandamari to hinder polling. By ten in the morning, the Election Commission had received multiple complaints from both parties about acts of violence, mostly in the Cooch Behar Lok Sabha seat.

The majority of seats in the first phase are from southern India, with 39 coming from Tamil Nadu and one from Puducherry. During his campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made several trips to the State as the BJP looked to establish itself there. Still, the two Dravidian majorities remain the front-runners: the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the reigning Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

On Friday morning, a UBGL cell explosion took place 500 meters from a polling place in Bijapur, in the Maoist-affected Bastar area. A member of the security staff participating in area domination exercises was hurt as a result. The first phase of the seven-phase Lok Sabha polls, which will see voting in up to 102 parliamentary constituencies spread across 21 states and Union territories, began today, following weeks of intense campaigning. Voting started at seven in the morning and will run until about six in the evening. On June 4, the votes will be counted.

On April 19, Google released a special doodle with a voting sign in honor of the beginning of the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections‘ first phase. An inked finger is used in the doodle to represent India’s democratic electoral process. When clicked, it takes viewers to the most popular stories regarding the Lok Sabha election’s first phase. A powerful symbol of India’s democratic political process, the elevated index finger covered in permanent ink replaced Google’s iconic logo on the homepage.

On 102 seats distributed across 21 states and Union Territories, voting has started for the first round of the Lok Sabha elections. All 39 seats in Tamil Nadu, five in Uttarakhand, two in Arunachal Pradesh, two in Meghalaya, one in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, one in Mizoram, one in Nagaland, one in Puducherry, one in Sikkim, and one in Lakshadweep are holding polls in the first phase. 12 seats in Rajasthan, 8 in Uttar Pradesh, 6 in Madhya Pradesh, 5 in each of Assam and Maharashtra, 4 in Bihar, 3 in West Bengal, 2 in Manipur, and 1 in each of Tripura, Jammu and Kashmir, and Chhattisgarh are also up for voting.
