At the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Mohali, Mumbai Indians defeated Punjab Kings by 9 runs on Thursday, earning their third victory of the year. The Mumbai Indians‘ innings was opened by the opening duo of Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan. But in the third over, Ishan Kishan attempted to cut a delivery from Kagiso Rabada on the off-side but instead found Harpreet Brar close to the boundary, costing MI their first wicket of the game.

The Mumbai Indians’ innings became stable when Surya Kumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma combined to score a ton of runs against Punjab Kings. While Harshal Patel was bowling, Surya hit a single to bring up his 23rd IPL fifty, his second of the season, off just 34 deliveries.

In the following over, Rohit Sharma (36 off 25 balls) fell victim to a slower delivery by Sam Curran, caught superbly by Harpreet Brar. Tilak Varma partnered with Suryakumar Yadav, maintaining pressure on Punjab Kings for the next five overs. However, Suryakumar Yadav’s (78 off 53 balls) aggressive attempt to accelerate the scoring rate led to his dismissal, caught by Prabhsimran Singh in a remarkable manner.

Tim David (14 off 7 balls) and captain Hardik Pandya (10 off 6 balls) were vital in helping MI reach 192/7 from their allowed 20 overs, even though Tilak Varma (34 off 18 balls) stayed unbeaten throughout the innings. MI was unable to get more than 200 runs, though, because of some outstanding bowling from Harshal Patel, who claimed two wickets and gave up only seven runs in the last over.

Gerald Coetzee and Jasprit Bumrah both scored twice on the powerplay. At one point, Ashutosh entered the game and smashed a 28-ball 61, leaving PBKS trailing 193 runs. However, Bumrah’s 3/21 (as well as Coetzee’s 3/32) once again enabled MI to end a thrilling game.

The Punjab Kings innings was then stabilized for a while by Harpreet Singh Bhatia and Shashank Singh, getting them very near to the 50-run benchmark before the left-hander was dismissed for 13 (14), by Shreyas Gopal, in the seventh over. Before Jitesh Sharma (9 off 9 balls) dismissed the wicketkeeper-batsman in the 10th over, Akash Madhwal ended the wicketkeeper-batsman’s partnership.
Then, as both of Punjab’s powerful batsmen went on power-hitting, it was once more time for Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma to enter the game.

Ashutosh carried the team and slowed down the MI bowlers to bring the game closer after Shashank was dismissed and it appeared all over. But as it came down to the very end for both sides, an unfortunate turn of events resulted in his dismissal.
MI claimed an exciting victory by 9 runs when Rabada overextended himself on a double when MI needed 12 off the final over.
