Sunil Gavaskar has opined that India’s Test series win in Australia last year by 2-1 will go down as one of the greatest victories in Indian cricket history. The former Indian cricketer further added that he was privileged to be in Australia and witness the golden chapter in Indian cricket.

Team India have been performing consistently in the longest format of the game over the last few years, and registered several victories in overseas conditions. India’s exuberant bowling line-up, and brilliant batting performance helped them register victories overseas in the last couple of years.

India, led by Ajinkya Rahane defeated Australia by 2-1 in a thrilling four-match Test series last year, and scripted a historic achievement after being blown away for 36 in the day-night Test in Adelaide.  The Test series win came for India with a depleted squad as a few of their first-choice players were injured during the series.

Recalling the series, former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar opined that India’s win in Australia last year is one of the greatest victoires in the history of Indian cricket. 

“India’s win in Australia early last year will go down as one of the greatest wins in Indian cricket history,” Gavaskar said while speaking to Sony Sports Network. 

India were wrapped up for their lowest Test total of 36 in the series opener. The team bounced back from a humiliating defeat in the first Test, and secure a series victory against Australia in their own backyard.

Gavaskar lavished praise on Team India for bouncing back in the four-match seires after being dismissed on a team total of 36 in the first Test.

“To pick themselves up after the dismissal with their lowest ever test score of 36 and then to beat a rampant home team is a tribute to the determination shown by the players and the leadership roles played by the captain, coach Ravi Shastri and his support group.”

“I was privileged to be there and see a golden chapter being written in the history of Indian cricket,” added the 72-year-old former right-handed opener.”

Former Australia cricketer Michael Clarke credited the bowling attack for India’s incredible comeback in the series. 

“India picked an attack that worked. Different bowlers – not everyone bowls the same, different tactics, different skills, different weapons, so the credit goes to India for their execution but also Australia might have taken for granted their success in the first test,” the former Australia captain said.
